Notes:Progressive address by a leading politician and landowner, Dufferin here discusses the problem of religious animosity in Ireland, regrets "the persecutions of successive Governments and the enactment of the penal laws" which meant that the Catholic population "transferred to their priesthood the fervid loyalty which might otherwise have been given to their Sovereign", questions "party processions" and cautions that "unmistakable impartiality should characterixe government interference" in this matter, regrets the sectional educational system, praises the Queen's Colleges, calls for the establishment of a form of intermediate education of which there is "an almost total absence" in Ireland, proposes the "elevation to an equality of pecuniary emolument" of all three churches or else disestablishment of the Established Church, discusses the landlord and tenant problem and Irish emigration noting he had already published works on these last two topics.
