Continuing our maritime theme for this week we jump from the beauty of Dingle Harbour to the (typically) splendid isolation of Tory Island off the coast of Donegal. The locals have an important visitor and as ever their hospitality to visitors is warm and welcoming. We are confident of identifying one, but can we name the other men in this Tynan shot from 1989?
The general consensus is that the men pictured here are (right to left): Alan Dukes (then leader of Fine Gael), Pól Ó Foighil
(FG politician & activist for island communities), and DInny McGinley (FG politician & TD for Donegal SW). It seems quite likely that this image was captured in "An Club" - Tory's social club....

At the bottom of this Dail debate is Dukes slagging off the Government of the day for promising Tory islanders the moon with no plans to deliver, on 12th April 1989. Perhaps this was prompted by his visit?

here is a tripadvisor review with a photo matching this ceiling of a "social club" a mile from a hotel. Edit: maybe not - youtube videos say that club has a much taller ceiling (at least today).

There are a whole pile of photos on Tory Island on 30th March 1989, including a helicopter and people in a hall.

The painting of a map of ireland behind the speakers in those shots is also still hanging in An Club under that banner.

Would one of them be the 'King of Tory'? I've not been able to find out who was King back in 1989. ~ I think the guy on the left might be Dinny McGinley who was Fine Gael TD for Donegal South West at the time, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinny_McGinley

Except we're still waiting for the bus . . . Soon it arrives, with a friendly driver and a laconic co-driver, and we're off to Derek Hill's hut to do the first interview. The bus is new to the island, makes it smaller. I remember interviewing Alan Dukes on a tractor and trailer on my first visit to Tory, while Derek Hill did a fine portrait of President Erskine Childers being conveyed on a cart. www.irishtimes.com/culture/glimpses-of-an-earlier-ireland...

The man in the middle looks like the Fine Gael politician from Connemara, the late Pól o Foighil.
