Newsclipping featuring image published on p. 333 of issue No. 2935 of French journal 'L'illustration journal universel', 27 May 1899 of crowds gathered around the monument dedicated to General Humbert that was unveiled by Maud Gonne on 11 May 1898 as part of the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the French landing at Killala in Co. Mayo in 1798. The statue depicts the Maid of Erin holding a sword while her dog stands beside her. (The monument was moved to its current location on Humbert Street in Ballina in 1987, where it was re-dedicated by Maud Gonne's son, the late Seán MacBride).
