Summary: | Depiction of an injured insurgent [a member of the United Irishmen] having taken part in the 1798 Rebellion; he lies against tree and is shown receiving the last rites from a priest. His commrades watch on - they are depicted holding pikes while a small group in the backgrounds are assembled around An Gal Gréine [a flag bearing the sunburst]. This flag was first thought to have been used in 1858 by the Irish Republican Brotherhood (not the United Irishmen). |
