Captn. Swayne [Captain Richard Longford Swayne] pitch-capping the people of Prosperous

Plate featuring illustration (attributed to Henry Brocas) which appeared in 'The Irish Magazine', February 1810 issue of Captain Richard Longford Swayne, commander of the City of Cork Militia, pitch-capping a man while stationed at Prosperous, County Kildare. A woman is being tortured in the background, houses are on fire and another man is shown having also just suffered the ordeal of pitch-capping. Swayne was killed when the Irish rebels set fire to the military barracks on 24 May, 1798.
