| Notes: | This item records a "Reorganisation o fthe Orange Order. A meeting of influential gentlemen from several counties of Ulster, was held in the Town-hall of Enniskillen, on 27th August, 1845, for the purpose of taking into consideration how far a union of all those who are ready to make common cause, in upholding the religion of the Reformation could be formed, in strict subserviency to the laws, the Earl of Enniskillen in the Chair." Laid out here are the resolutions proposed and adopted, the report of the committee appointed to progress the mieeting's aims (Oct. 1845), and the detailed "Rules and Ordinances as settled and approved by Mr Napier," the author of that report. The rise of militant nationalism in the form of the Young Ireland movement "made the minds of the loyal minority very uneasy. The Orange Institution was in abeyance. Orangeism existed it is true ; but its activities were withdrawn ... Under such circumstances the Orangemen of the North set themselves seriously to think that their Institution ought to be revived, and an effort was made in that direction [at a meeting on] 12th February 1844 [at which was ] formed 'The Grand Orange Lodge of Ulster' ... But a much more important meeting was held in the Town Hall, Enniskillen, on 27th of August, 1845 ... [of which] the committee prepared an elaborate report [which determined] the basis upon which the Institution was reorganized, and at present exists. [R. M.
