An original version of this image drawn by James Glen Wilson in 1849 and printed by Lamont Brothers of Belfast is held in the NLI Prints and Drawings Collection at NLI call number PD C90. Text printed underneath image: "The above illustration depicts the scene at the historic Battle of Dolly's Brae, fought on the 12th July, 1849. ... The Orange procession is seen going towards the left, after returning over Dolly's Brae, which was occupied by the 13th Light Dragoons and 9th Foot, also Police. ... The constabulary, followed by Orangemen, are seen charging the rebels in the middle distance, and putting them to flight". The "Battle of Dolly's Brae" took place between Rathfriland and Castlewellan, Co. Down on 12 July 1849. 1,400 Orangemen marched from Rathfriland to Tollymore Park near Castlewellan and 1,000 Ribbonmen gathered, with rocks were thrown at the Orange parade. Subsequently Catholic homes in the surrounding area were burned and 80 Catholics were killed. |
