Two women wearing mantles kneel in prayer in front of a holy well, near Galway. A girl nearby covers her head with a cloak and a young boy lies on the ground watching the women praying. In the background are two fishermen working on the shore of an inlet, one working in the water and the other from a rowboat. In the distance a train crosses a bridge over the inlet to the sea. According to the accompanying text to the illustration these women "wear a blue mantle and a red body-gown, and petticoat. These fisher-folks are devout Catholics, and we may fairly suppose that the pilgrims at the holy well hail from the Claddagh". |
