Summary: | London-born graphic artist Donald McGill, (1875-1962), designed several postcards relating to Home Rule [see pp. 175-176 of 'Irish Politics In Postcards' by Declan Martin, published in 2016 by the Ulster Historical Foundation]. On recto, printed at top in green font: "HOME RULE". Underneath a smiling woman is shown in profile, wearing a green dress and bright red shawl. She points to a poster on a wall in the background that reads "VOTES For The COLLEENS". On the lower left in black font is written:"ARRAH NOW THE BHOYS 'LL NIVER REFUSE US THE VOTE WHIN THEY GIT A PARLYMINT OF THEIR OWN". On verso, postcard addressed to: "Master Wm. Robinson, 18 Talbot St., Dublin". Postmarked "1.15 PM SP 21 12" [September 21st, 1912] on George V green halfpenny stamp. Written in ink on verso: "Hello Stuart, I'm off today for a few days. Sorry for your toothache. Hope you are a.r. again. Your mother [...] hear all news will [...] soon. Not married yet. Am keeping "Rose Villa" for you and love to all. Anne". |
