Summary:Illustration of an incident that occurred during the War of Independence in Cork, on 15 February 1921 known as the Upton train ambush, featured on the front cover of 'La Domenica de Corriere' (an illustrated supplement to "Corriere della Sera", Anno XXIII. Num. 9. 27 Febbraio - 6 Marzo 1921). The IRA mounted an attack on a train carrying British soldiers at Upton, County Cork - three of its volunteers were killed (two were wounded) while six British soldiers were wounded; six civilian passengers on the train were killed and ten wounded in the crossfire. This image depicts the gun battle between the soldiers on the military train, the IRA on the platform and civilians trying to flee the scene.
