While one would not expect to see Irish represented in the officer corps, certainly not in the Boston of the mid-nineteenth century, they are strongly represented in the roster of enlisted men. As was the case with a number of Northern units, the officers in the cavalry outfits had little experience with actually riding a horse and had to be trained. One reads of some being strapped to their horses before entering combat.
