Notes: | "For the First Massachusetts Cavalry Association." Reprint. Originally published: Boston : Houghton, Mifflin & Co., 1891. Folded map in pocket. While one would not expect to see Irish represented in the officer corps, certainly not in the Boston of the mid-nineteenth century, they are strongly represented in the roster of enlisted men. As was the case with a number of Northern units, the officers in the cavalry outfits had little experience with actually riding a horse and had to be trained. One reads of some being strapped to their horses before entering combat. Physical description: x, 490 pages : frontispiece, plates, portraits, maps (partly fld.) ; 24 cm. more |
