A much needed and welcome study of one of the South's most colorful military units, the 1st Louisiana Special Battalion also known as "Wheat's Tigers." Beginning with a brief look at the Filibuster Wars, the work takes a look at the men who comprised "Wheat's Tigers." Many of the Tigers were recruited from the rough and ready Irish dock workers. Their predilection for extra-curricular brawls and heavy drinking was well-known and well-deserved requiring a strong hand to keep them in line. Roberdeau Wheat was the man for the job, sometimes resorting to pistol-whipping to maintain discipline. Wheat loved his men and the respect and affection was returned.
