With no military experience, he was awarded the rank of colonel and six months later his former brother-in-law, Jefferson Davis, promoted him to brigadier general over three qualified and experienced officers. But he had one problem and that was the raucous Louisiana Tigers, under the command of the battle-hardened Roberdeau Wheat. His request that the outfit be transferred was denied.
