Originally published in the New Orleans Times-Democrat, January 31 and February 7, 1897. Boyd, a commissary officer, served under Taylor's Louisiana Brigade during Stonewall Jackson's Shenandoah Valley Campaign. From mid-1863 to the end of the war he was the chief of engineers on Taylor's staff. Boyd founded Louisiana State University after war. In spite of Boyd's admiration for Taylor, he was not pleased with the execution of Corcoran and O'Brien. In a telling understatement, Boyd observed that "We had another and better use for our men than shooting them ourselves."
