This collection of pro-Catholic and pro-papal essays is attributed to Patrick McMahon, an Irish Catholic lawyer and Liberal Member of Parliament from Wexford. McMahon was born in 1813, graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, in 1836, was a staunch advocate of tenant rights, and considered "the Established Church of England in Ireland the source and symbol of disunion and degradation."
