| Summary: | Sheet advertising a talk to be given by Hannah Sheehy-Skeffington in San Francisco to help secure Tom Mooney a new trial. Tom Mooney the son of Irish emigrants to the U.S. was tried and convicted for the 'Preparedness Day' bombing that took place on July 22, 1916 in San Francisco (the bomb exploded at Steuart and Market Street near the Embarcadero). Mooney was sentenced to be hanged - however Woodrow Wilson telegraphed the Governor of California William Stephens asking him to commute Mooney's sentence to life imprisonment; he was in prison from 1918-1939 and was pardoned in 1939 by liberal Democratic Governor Culbert Olson. This sheet features an image of Hannah Sheehy-Skeffington, [taken by Underwood & Underwood] in which she is seated, wearing a hat and seemingly pausing from reading a newspaper which is on the arm of the chair she is seated in. On the extreme right on the sheet is an illustration of a harp surrounded by shamrocks. Text continues: "The Irish World has been a bulwark for justice in these cases. It has prevailed upon Mrs. Skeffington to add her powerful voice to that of President Wilson to secure justice for Tom Mooney and Warren K. Billings. Under auspices of Machinists Union Lodge No. 68. Indorsed by San Francisco Labor Council and Affliated Bodies". |
