A number of the poets are of Irish descent, namely, Augustine Duganne; Joseph O'Connor of Rochester, New York; Michael O'Connor, a sergeant in the 140th New York regiment who was twenty-five years old when he was killed at Potomac Station, Virginia on December 28th, 1862; Father Abram Ryan; William Davis Gallagher; Charles Halpine; Charles Dawson Shanley among others. Thomas Buchanan Read, whose parents were Scotch-Irish from Northern Ireland, is also represented by his famous Sheridan's Ride.
