With reference to the Sunningdale Agreement (signed at Sunningdale Park, Berkshire on 9 December 1973) which was an attempt to establish a power-sharing Northern Ireland Executive and cross-border Council of Ireland. The Northern Ireland Assembly Bill became law on 3 May 1973 and elections for the new assembly were held on 28 June 1973. The Northern Ireland Executive was formed following the Northern Ireland Assembly elections of 1973 - on 21 November 1973, agreement was reached on a voluntary coalition of pro-agreement parties [the cross-community Alliance Party, the SDLP and UUP members] with former Prime Minister Brian Faulkner (UUP) becoming chief executive, SDLP leader Gerry Fitt appointed deputy chief executive and SDLP leader John Hume appointed Minister for Commerce. However opposition from Unionists saw the resignation of Brian Faulkner and escalating violence and the Ulster Workers' Council general strike (15 May 1974) which led to the collapse of the Agreement on 28 May 1974. The 1998 Good Friday Agreement [on which the current system of Northern Irish devolution is based], closely resembles the Sunningdale Agreement. |
