Geraldine Kennedy was elected a T.D. for the Progressive Democrats in Dún Laoghaire on 17 February 1987, coming third in the poll (winning 9.4% of the first-preference vote). She was appointed PD chief whip and spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Northern Ireland. She lost her seat in the 15 June 1989 general election; she returned to serve as political editor of 'The Irish Times' (1999 - 2002) and then as editor (2002 - 2011).
