Poster featuring images taken by photographer Denis O'Connor relating to a pilgrimage by parishioners from the Diocese of Ferns, Co. Wexford to Lourdes, France. With the encyclical 'Fulgens corona' ("Radiant Crown") given at St. Peter's Rome on 8 September [the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary] 1953, Pope Pius XII (1876-1958) ordered a Marian year for 1954, the first in Roman Catholic Church history. The year was filled with Marian initiatives - the study of Mary, the mother of Jesus, cultural events relating to this and social gatherings and pilgrimages to shrines dedicated to Mary.
