Although the Irish played a significant role in the Catholic Church of Mississippi, they did not predominate as they often did in other areas. The Church was more catholic with French, Italians, Germans, Spanish, English and others strongly represented. The bishop, Bishop William Elder, was of English stock from Maryland. The occupying Federals were very hostile to Bishop Elder as he had once prayed for Jefferson Davis andd refused to pray for President Lincoln during Mass. The army was adamant even arresting and exiling the bishop. Elder appealed to Lincoln who affirmed Elder's right of conscience.
