William Gough was born at Woodstown, Killeenagarriff, County Limerick, Ireland. He was the son of Lt.-Col. George Gough and Letitia Bunbury. He died in 1822, lost off Kinsale Head. He gained the rank of Major in the 68th Regiment during the Battle of Vitoria in the which he was severely wounded. He fought in the Battle of Salamanca and also the Peninsular Wars.
