Ripple, with the 52nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment, was captured in July, 1864. He was sent to both teh Andersonville and the Florence prisons. He was fortunate to avoid some of the horrors of the prisons that others had to endure because of his ability to play the fiddle. He formed a band, even playing outside the prisons.
