When the Irish Brigade made a frontal assault on the stone wall at Marye's Heights, they were met by Colonel McMillan, himself a transplanted Irishman and Captain Patrick McGovern of the Lochrane Guards, the legion's own Irish company. Both sides hurled insults at the other. The Irish Brigade was forced to withdraw from an impossible position, incurring great casualties. The following article appeared in the August 31st, 1861 edition of the Macon Daily Telegraph and explains the unique origins and nature of this company.
