| Notes: | Originally published privately: Andersonville diary ... Auburn, N.Y. : J.L. Ransom, 1881. Ransom was a 20-year-old Brigade Quartermaster of the Ninth Michigan Cavalry when he was captured in 1863. He was near death when he was transferred to a Southern hospital, in which he recovered his health. He states that not all the horrors were intentionally caused by the Confederate captors but were also due to the lack of discipline, low morale and the low morals of some Union captives who terrorized the camp inmates. Marvel, as one would expect, has his misgivings about Ransom. He writes : "Ransom's published diary, the original of which he claimed later to have lost in a fire, contains so many inconsistencies as to raise a serious doubt whether any original ever existed; few of the messmates whose deaths he records, for instance, appear on any of the death or burial registers..."
