The Montgomery Guards, founded in 1849, were Virginia's elite Irish unit. They were led by Captain P. T. Moore from County Galway and Lieutenant John Dooley, Sr. from County Limerick. The unit was mobilized in 1859 in response to John Brown's raid at Harper's Ferry. They mustered into Confederate service as Company C of the First Virginia Infantry (called "Old First") on April 21, 1861, one day after Virginia's secession. They would soon be involved in the first battle of Manassas. Physical description: 174 pages : illustrations, maps ; 24 cm. more |
