He entered West Point in 1857 and graduated first in his class. His work as an engineer along the South Carolina coast earned him a colonel's commission, commanding the 140th N. Y. Infantry, a regiment raised in Rochester. A very promising military career was snipped in the bud when he fell on July 2nd, 1863, while leading his men in battle on Gettysburg's Little Round Top.
