Summary: | Letters to and from Col. Wolfe of Forenaughts, Co. Kildare, county governor, from staff at Dublin Castle, relating to incidents of social disturbance and political activity. Includes correspondence between between Wolfe and Sir Charles Saxton, of Dublin Castle, concerning disaffection among the Kildare population and incidents of unrest in Blackwood (1808-10), trials for those charged with committing 'outrages' in Co. Kildare (28-29 Apr. 1812) and a political meeting at the Curragh (29 June 1812) and between Wolfe and E.B. Littlehales of Dublin Castle, concerning requests that a military detachment to be sent to Properous (24 Mar-1 June 1812). Included is a copy letter to Saxton from Charles Bury, of Downings, to Saxton, in which he describes Prosperous as a 'Hotbed of Rebellion & Disturbance' (18 May 1812). Also included are letters to Wolfe from J. Pollock, concerning the disturbed state of the county (19 Dec. 1808), and the then Chief Secretary Robert Peel, concerning trials for offences under the terms of Habeas Corpus (21 Jul. 1814) and reports of dissent in Rathangan against the payment of tithes (8 Nov. 1815). |
