| Summary: | Handbill (relating to the 1908 North Leitrim by-election) features an illustration depicting John Redmond, driving a horse and trap in the Irish countryside; on the side of the trap (attached to the blinkered horse) is written "Parliamentarianism". Redmond looks back as a car speeds off in another direction - the vehicle, packed with people, has "Sinn Fein" written on the side. Signed lower right of image "Fitzpatrick" - this is the artist Thomas Fitzpatrick. Underneath the image, printed in bold black font are the words "A thing of the past"; underneath this is printed "John Redmond - "Bad luck to that infernal machine with the foreign name. Ever since it came on the road I have lost any fares I had. I can't afford to give the poor baste a feed of oats. I'm to blame meself. Me ould yoke is a bit slow, and it's out of date. I was wan time in comfortable circumstances". Lower right is printed "From "The Lepracaun" (this image is a reprint of an illustration that first appeared in this journal). In June 1907, Irish Parliamentary Party M.P. for North Leitrim, C.J. Dolan resigned his seat, defecting to Sinn Féin; he ran as the Sinn Féin candidate in the by-election in North Leitrim held on 21 February 1908 but was defeated by Francis Meehan who won the seat for the Irish Parliamentary Party by 3,103 votes to 1,157. This was the only election contested by Sinn Féin prior to the 1916 Rising. |
