Description: Kettle expresses his deep thanks to Hammond for his 'extraordinary kindness' and says that he has taken the pledge and feels that he has got 'clear of the vice that had me at the point of ruin'. He mentions college business which may delay his departure a little, and a problem with his foot, due to marching in heavy boots in preparation for joining the army at the Curragh. He requests a note regarding his sick leave which is required to release his pay.
