Summary:This book is part of the 16 Lives series, which is devoted to recording the lives of the 16 men who were executed after the 1916 Easter Rising. It describes who these men where and what drove them to commit themselves to a violent revolution. Their common desire was to set Ireland on the road to national freedom, united under the one banner of the army of the Irish Republic. They occupied key buildings in Dublin and around Ireland for one week before they were forced to surrender. The leaders were singled out for harsh treatment and all 16 men were executed for their role in the Rising. Con Colbert is one of the lesser-known 1916 leaders. A romantic patriot, he envisioned independent Ireland as a Gaelic utopia. He worked tirelessly for the dream of an Irish-speaking, independent republic. Even before his execution, Colbert was held up as an icon, and a role model for the Irish Volunteers. Con Colbert commanded forces at Watkins' Brewery and at Jameson's distillery during the Rising. He was executed at Kilmainham Goal on May 8, 1916, at age 27. -- Publisher description
