Illuminated address presented to Joseph Devlin,
'Address to Joseph Devlin Esq., President Belfast & Ulster United Centenary Association ... the various 98 clubs in Belfast and Ulster ... [wish] to testify in a public manner their appreciation of the invaluable services ... which you have rendered to the centenary movement, not only in Belfast but in the province of Ulster'.
The address is written in calligraphic script and the text is surrounded by a decorative border containing vignette portraits of the 1798 Rebellion leaders, Wolfe Tone, Henry Joy McCracken, William Orr and Thomas Russell. There are also painted scenes from the rebellion and, at the top, a photograph of Devlin.
The address is signed 'R. Carswell & Son, Illuminators, Belfast'.
Joseph Devlin was a nationalist politician, journalist and member of parliament. He founded the Ancient Order of Hibernians in the 1890s.
