Summary:The petition consists of a memorial in the names of four named shipmasters of Arklow, which gives an account of the night of 13th April1847, when the 'Rochester' sailing from Liverpool to New York, foundered on the Blackwater Banks off the coast of Wexford. Early on the morning of 14th of April the shipmasters rescued all the passengers they could carry. The remainder were rescued later by a steamer. The petitioners conclude by saying that they trust 'their case may be taken into consideration and that they may receive such remuneration for the services so rendered as their case may be considered deserving of'. The memorial is followed by references as to the veracity of the account given; the referees including, amongst others, the secretary of the Arklow Relief Committee, the parish priest of Arklow, the Poor Law Guardian, an agent for Lloyds and the Captain of the Coastguard of Gorey District. The letter is addressed to The Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, London. A note is added on the outside fold 'Try 8 Great Winchester Street'.
