Summary:Whitley begins a third person narrative of the travels of Messrs. Brown, Jones, Robinson and Smith, but after a while continues in the first person ' ... Mr Smith's own phraseology - verbatim et literatim.' The travellers were in Ireland from the16th to 24th August 1865, visiting Killarney and Wicklow, before heading back to Holyhead and travelling through Wales to their homes in Manchester and Leeds. Whitley gives much attention to the people they meet and their manners and conversation. The diary also records a journey to Paris in September with members of his family.
