Summary: | Lithographic card featuring a black & white image of Martin Savage, wearing military uniform within a black frame with the following text printed underneath image: "Martin Savage died for Ireland Dec. [December] 19th 1919". Featured behind this image of him (and printed in colour) are two tricolours, two bayonets and a soldiers' cap [this is located directly above his head in the b&w image]. Underneath the image is featured a harp and an Irish wolfhound with the words "Dia trocaire ar a n-anam" [translated from Irish this means "God have mercy on his soul"] printed in Cló Gaelach in green font on scrolls. Written in verso in pencil: "Killed in attempt to assassinate Viceroy in 1920". Note this date is incorrect - Savage was killed [as detailed on recto of postcard] on 19 December 1919 during the ambush on Lord John French at Ashtown during the War of Independence. |
