Summary:Literary papers of the novelist, newspaper editor and publisher Edmund Downey of Waterford. Included are drafts of his novel 'The Merchant of Killogue' (1894), extracts from serials and newspapers containing his short stories, drafts of his plays, among them 'Fardorough', 'The Abbé' and 'The Chief Baron', his research notes and writings on the life of Irish novelists Charles Lever (produced for his book 'Charles Lever, His Life in Letters', published in 1906) and Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu and notebooks and worksheets containing research notes on the history of Waterford city, produced for his book 'The Story of Waterford' (1914).


Also included are manuscript drafts of stories, novels and other writings by various authors, compiled by Downey. Among these drafts are the writings of Richard Downey, Edmund Downey's cousin Richard Dowling and literary drafts sent to Downey by a variety of authors, most probably in his capacity as a publisher.
