Eibhín Ní Chathailriabhaigh [Ellen Colleary] was born in Donnybrook, Dublin, on 1st June 1910, to Michael Colleary from Sligo and Honora or Nora Broderick from Galmoy, Co. Kilkenny. She had two brothers Michael and Seán [married to Phyllis Ryan], and one sister Anne. She attended the College of Commerce in Rathmines, and attended night classes in Irish at Rathmines Vocational School. She joined the Civil Service and commenced working in the Land Commission in 1928 before being transferred to the Department of Education. She won a scholarship from Rathmines Vocational School to attend Coláiste an Phiarsaigh in Tullow, Co. Galway. On her return to Dublin, she joined the Sandymount branch of Conradh na Gaeilge, Craobh Phádraig Mhic Phiarais. She became president of the Ard-Chraobh branch for many years before her death. She played a part in the re-establishment of Oireachtas na Gaelige in 1939. She was elected uachtaráin of An tOireachtas in 1971 and was cathaoirleach of Coiste Náisiunta an Oireachtais from 1981 to 1986. She was a member of the Chomhar Drámaíochta for many years. She died on 7th June 2001.
