Notes:The diaries begin in English when Hyde was about 14 years old, with occasional phrases in Irish (written in Hyde's own phonetic transcriptions). As time goes on more of the entries are written in Irish, until it becomes the predominant language of the diaries. At the back of the volumes are miscellaneous notes, financial calculations etc. There are occasional errors regarding dates. In some of the years the entries are more scant and infrequent.

Douglas Hyde was a Gaelic scholar, founder of the Gaelic League, and first president of Ireland. Born in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon he grew up in Frenchpark, where he learned Irish by speaking to the country people. He joined the Society for the Preservation of the Irish Language and the Gaelic Union, before becoming first President of the Gaelic League in July 1893, a post which he held until 1915. He resigned then when the League voted to make it a specifically nationalist organisation; although he himself was a nationalist Hyde chose to make a stand on his original vision that it should remain open to well-disposed unionists in the name of national reconciliation. Hyde published numerous bilingual collections of Connacht folk tales and folk poetry, and also wrote and published original poetry in Irish. In 1909 he became the first professor of Irish at UCD. After independence he served as a senator in the Irish Free State and became the first president of Ireland under the 1937 constitution.
