Notes:The letters are dated 3rd, 10th and 23rd October 1896 respectively, the last letter accompanied by its envelope from the office of the Ulster King of Arms. The address on the envelope is 'Henry Wagner Esq., F.S.A., 13 Half Moon St., Piccadilly, London W.' Two of the letters are written from Dublin Castle, where Vicars's office was, and the other on a visit to London.

Sir Arthur Vicars, genealogist and antiquarian, was Ulster King of Arms from 1893 to 1908. When the Irish crown jewels, of which he was custodian, were found to have been stolen he was dismissed as he was considered not to have exercised due vigilance in his position. The recipient of the letters, Henry Wagner (1840-1926) was a genealogical researcher, founding Fellow of the Huguenot Society of London and an authority on Huguenot pedigrees.
