| Notes: | Samuel Faulkner was an amateur architect, and agent for the Whaley family estates, including Castletown, Co. Carlow. The second line of the address is scratched out, leaving just 'Samuel Faulkner Esq. ... Carlow'. Thomas 'Buck' Whaley is described in the Dictionary of Irish Biography as 'a politician and rake'. He inherited estates worth about £7,000 a year, but succeeded in spending and gambling away all his money. He was a member of the Irish Parliament at the time of the Act of Union, and changed sides several times, selling his vote to the highest bidder. 'Buck' Whaley's father Richard Chappel Whaley built the property in St. Stephen's Green, Dublin now known as Newman House. Physical description: 1 item. more |
