| Summary: | Handbill [bearing the title in bold: "Lusitania"] and two photographs - a studio photograph one of a young girl with her arm around an older woman who is seated [presumably a daughter and her mother] and a second photograph of a teenage girl [half-length portrait]. Paper label on back of frame reads: 'John Ryan Co. Picture Framemakers & Gilders, 58 West Regent Lane, next to Lansdowne Restaurant, Hope St. City [Glasgow]'. The RMS Lusitania, a Cunard Company ocean liner was torpedoed by a German U-boat U-20 on 7 May 1915; it sank in 18 minutes 11 miles off the Old Head of Kinsale in Co. Cork. 1,198 people were killed, 761 people survived. This action directly contributed to entry of the United States of America into World War I with the U.S. Congress voting to declare war on Germany on April 6 1917. |
