Notes:'The Patriot' is one of the stories from the 1932 volume entitled 'Midsummer Night Madness'. The volume consists of pages of different sizes, bound in black morocco with gilt edging and lettering; written on the spine is 'Sean O'Faolain The Patriot Original Manuscript'. On the inside front cover is an Arthur Rackham designed bookplate. An autograph letter to O'Faolain from the editor and writer, Edward Garnett, is tipped into the volume; Garnett writes 'you have a wonderful touch - & a wonderful feel for Nature'; this letter is dated Oct., 15th, 1931. There are two letters loosely inserted from 'Mary Lee', written on lined foolscap paper, one addressed to O'Faolain and one to his wife. These letters are written from Gougane Barra in Co. Cork, and give an interesting insight into life in rural Ireland in 1931. There is also a newspaper cutting of O'Faolain's obituary from The Daily Telegraph, 22nd April 1991.

The first four pages are typed and heavily revised in black ink and pencil. The rest is handwritten. Two flyleaves at the beginning are inscribed by O'Faolain; one reads 'Original ms. of The Patriot in Midsummer Night Madness. It is one of my favourite stories - an honest blend of the 'realistic' and 'romantic' qualities of life. It is all true and all genuine. No fake.'
