| Summary: | Cunniam begins by giving instructions regarding one or more enclosures [not present], which Coates is to read and forward to Arthur & William Bryan; he tells him what steps to take in the case of his instructions not being followed. He then talks about his experiences in Philadelphia, which he had difficulty leaving because the Americans wanted him to fight in the war against the British. He mentions a battle on 17th June (known now as the Battle of Bunker Hill), in which the British had heavy losses, though they won. He tells Coates that he has bought a large quantity of flour and that the people in Newfoundland are starving. In a postscript written three days later, Cunniam says he has arranged for himself to master a boat called the Polly and to travel to Ireland from Newfoundland. |
