Flanagan writes "Barnett wants to employ our men and states that Heyns [G. Heyns Sons Ltd.] scabs would stow the stuff. I told them I could do nothing for them and I believed the only way out of it would be to hire some other steamer than a Head Liner [Shipping Company]" but also mentions that "some of the boys are coming and saying it means about 17/- a day to them".
