The Abbey Theatre went on its first American tour in 1911-12. During the tour performances of Synge's 'The Playboy of the Western World' provoked disturbances in various cities and in Philadelphia the entire cast was arrested and charged with indecency at the instigation of the local Clan-na-Gael organiser Joseph McGarrity. The case was subsequently dismissed.
