John Bagwell was general manager of the Great Northern Railways (GNR) between 1911 and 1926. He was an independent member of Seanad Eireann in the Irish Free State in 1922, and held that office until 1936. He was also a member of the Anglo-Irish ascendancy and one of those listed for execution by the IRA, who burned down his house three weeks before his kidnapping during the Civil War. He was kidnapped on the evening of 30th January 1923 and held hostage in the Dublin Mountains.
