Notes: | The Carpenter Fund was instated after Walter Carpenter's release from Mountjoy Prison, where he was imprisoned for a month for "using language calculated to lead to a breach of the peace and with having endeavoured to degrade the King in the esteem of his subjects" during a speech on 14th July 1911, protesting King George V's upcoming visit to Ireland. Senator Thomas McPartlin died in 1923 while acting as delegate from Ireland to the International Congress of Labour at Geneva. McPartlin left behind a widow and children when he died and this fund was established to aid them after his death. Physical description: 1 folder (3 items). more |
