| Summary: | O'Casey thanks McCarthy for her letter and a clipping related to Paul Shyre, the American producer of successful O'Casey adaptations. (He and O'Casey later had a serious falling out over the film production of 'Young Cassidy', based on O'Casey's autobiographies). He talks about a visit to an eye specialist, and the difficulty he has had for some time in seeing properly. He mentions an article in the Irish Bulletin, which suggested, wrongly, that there was a portrait of O'Casey in the foyer of the Abbey Theatre, which would be moved to the new theatre, along with portraits of other famous Irish writers. He wrote twice to the Irish Dept. of External Affairs, and eventually got an apology from the Minister for the error (though not for the omission it would appear). O'Casey talks of the controversies surrounding the granting of money for the Abbey's rebuilding, criticisms of the theatre's policies etc. and gives an account of two visits from Abbey director, Ernest Bylthe, begging for permission to stage the old plays. |
