Correspondence between John T. Ryan and Joseph McGarrity, including copies of letters from John Devoy and others,
|Main Creator:||Ryan, John T.|
Letters mainly dealing with Eamon De Valera's campaign in the United States of America, 1919-1920, Ryan's mission to Germany for arms, relations between various Republican interests of the post Civil War period in Ireland. Some letters partly in code with keys in some letters from 1923.
Some letters are written using code names, with John T. Ryan adressing McGarrity as "Dear Phil" and signing as "Your Cousin". McGarrity signs same and addresses Ryan as "Dear Cousin". Many code names are based on location, eg. "Philadelphia" / "Phil" for Joseph McGarrity based in Philadelphia. The code name "Hudson" (abbreviated to "H") may stand for John Devoy based in New York. "O.H." may be an abbreviation of 'Old Homestead' and refer to Ireland. A 'letter-following' cipher is used throughout the correspondence. Following this rule "V.C." deciphers as 'U.B.' the abbreviated form of 'United Brotherhood' (the term internally used for Clan-na-Gael).
Letters in code separated from general correspondence. A key for the cipher used in 1923 is included with MS 17,486/2/4. A list of code names used can be found in MS 17,637/2.
Date format used by correspondents alternates between day/month/year and month/day/year, and as such the catalogued dates for some correspondence is questionable.
