The Battle of Talavera took place on July 27 and 28, 1809 just outside the town of Talavera de la Reina, (over 120 km south of Madrid).

Letterpress broadside reads: 'A glorious victory over the French! gained by Sir Arthur Wellesley on the 27th and 28th of July, at Talavera, in Spain. Loss of the French, (Commanded by the mock King Joseph in Person,) [a reference to Joseph Bonaparte, though it was his military adviser Marshal Jean-Baptiste Jourdan who actually led the Grance Armée] Four Generals and fifteen thousand men killed, twenty pieces of cannon and ten eagles taken'.
